According to the Mayo Clinic, if cavities aren't treated, they expand and impact the inner layers of the tooth. They can lead to toothaches, infections, and tooth loss. While cavities are among the world's most prevalent health problems, they are also preventable. By following some basic preventative measures, you can keep your teeth healthy and cavity-free.

Brush Your Teeth Regularly

Brushing your teeth is something that most people do each day. However, it is important that you don’t just make this a part of your bedtime routine. Thoroughly brush your teeth a minimum of two times daily for at least two minutes.

To ensure that you are spending an adequate amount on each side, consider buying a toothbrush with a timer built-in. You can also use your phone or an egg timer.

Some experts have suggested that you brush after every meal and snack for more advanced care. Remember always to use toothpaste that contains fluoride. If you are in a place where brushing isn’t possible such as work or school, rinsing your mouth with water can be helpful. Also, consider investing in travel-size bottles of mouthwash.

Use A Mouthwash Daily

Mouthwash is an excellent addition to your brushing routine to help protect your teeth against the formation of cavities. When combined with brushing, many types of mouthwash use antimicrobial ingredients to help fight gum disease, plaque build-up, and gingivitis.

Mouthwash also has the added benefit of reaching areas of the mouth that are not readily accessible to toothbrushes. Certain mouthwash brands contain chemicals such as lidocaine and benzocaine, which are useful for fighting mouth pain. According to the American Dental Association, some mouthwash products are also effective in fighting tooth decay related to Xerostomia, or dry mouth. Visit Your Dentist

Having the advice of a professional is invaluable. They are trained to recognize symptoms of decay and pinpoint detrimental patterns of behavior that you may otherwise miss.

Dentists also have specialized equipment for removing plaque and tartar build-up. If plaque bacteria are not removed, it can harden and become very difficult to remove at home.

Oral exams and cleanings should be scheduled with a dentist at least every six months. For those who are more susceptible to dental issues or have chronic gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. Have Sealants Placed

There are some additional protective measures you can take for your children to prevent cavities. 

Sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of your child’s premolars and molars (back teeth). According to The Journal of the American Dental Association, studies give a clear indication that there is a marked benefit of the use of sealants in preventing cavities in children and teens. In conjunction with good oral hygiene, they can last up to ten years.

Drink Fluoridated Water

Most public water supplies have been treated with fluoride, making it useful in preventing tooth decay. Tap water helps remineralize teeth and actually promotes saliva production which wards away harmful bacteria. If you only drink bottled water, try rinsing your mouth with tap water when you brush.

Eat Tooth-Healthy Foods

Not all foods are good for your teeth. However, some foods protect your teeth, including fruits and vegetables, cheese, and sugar-free gum. Eating cheese raises the pH levels in the mouth and body, lowering your chance of tooth decay.

The fibrous nature of fruits and vegetables increases the saliva level in your mouth which slows decay. Sugar-free gum pulls food particles from around the gum line and produces a similar effect to brushing.
